For thousands of years people have been rowing backwards, looking back to their port of departure instead of forward to their destination.
The reason is biomechanical: our strongest muscles are in the back, shoulders, and biceps, making a pulling motion more efficient than pushing. Forward Facing Rowing System combines the best of both worlds — you face your destination while still using that same efficient pulling stroke.
Inspired by a reciprocating hinge used by duck hunters in the Louisiana swamps in the late 1800s, our system was engineered from the ground up using modern CAD/CAM technology. Early prototypes were tested in aluminum to identify stress points, and the final design was cast in marine-grade stainless steel with self-lubricating silicon bronze pivot pins — no cables, no pulleys, no grease, no adjustments. The asymmetric oar cradles and link arms increase blade speed by 15% relative to handle movement, and actually impose less stress on the gunwales than traditional oarlocks. The harder you pull, the smoother it feels.
Simple to Use First-time users find that rowing toward a destination is purely instinctive — just point the boat and pull. Experienced rowers may overcorrect on turns at first, but most find their rhythm within 15 minutes. Oars swing inboard for storage without removing the mechanism, and the cradle unit detaches from the permanently-mounted base with a single pin and no tools.
